What the Procedure Involves

Regardless of what it’s called, the process is straightforward and consistent:

  • Purified, temperature-controlled water is introduced into the colon.
  • Waste and water are released through tubing or into a basin.
  • Several gentle cycles may be repeated during a session.
  • A trained practitioner is available for guidance and reassurance.

Clients often describe the experience as lightening and relieving, though perceptions vary.

Where the Terms Come From

  • Colonic Irrigation: The term colonic irrigation is used in the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe. The word “irrigation” means washing out with water.
  • Colon Hydrotherapy: The phrase 'colon hydrotherapy' became more common in the US in recent years. It frames the procedure within the broader category of “hydrotherapy,” or water-based wellness treatments.

The two names reflect geography and preference, not a difference in technique.

When exploring ways to support digestive comfort, two terms often appear: colonic irrigation and colon hydrotherapy. At first glance, they may sound like different treatments, but in fact, they describe the same process: the gentle introduction of warm, filtered water into the colon to encourage bowel movements.

So why the two names? The answer lies more in terminology, geography, and usage than in the treatment itself. Let’s take a closer look.

A Brief History of Colonics

The idea of cleansing the colon with water is not new. Ancient cultures, including those of the Egyptians and Ayurvedic traditions, describe forms of bowel cleansing as part of broader health practices. In modern times, colon hydrotherapy developed as a structured, professional treatment, with today’s equipment designed for hygiene, comfort, and safety. While the terminology has shifted, the intention remains the same: to support digestive ease and renewal.

When People Consider a Colonic

Clients often explore colonics when they want to feel lighter or reset their routines. Some choose to book after returning from overseas travel, while others choose to book before starting a detox program or making dietary changes. Many simply want a sense of digestive comfort. Each experience is personal, and the outcomes vary.

Reported Benefits

Clients who undergo colonics, whether referred to as irrigation or hydrotherapy, often share that they:

  • Feel lighter or less bloated
  • Notice relief from sluggish digestion
  • Find it supportive when beginning dietary or lifestyle changes

These experiences are subjective and vary from individual to individual.

Colonics as Part of a Balanced Lifestyle

At Colon Irrigation Melbourne, we encourage clients to view colon hydrotherapy as one option within a larger wellness toolkit. Staying hydrated, eating a fibre-rich diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress all play key roles in gut health. Colonics can complement these habits by offering a sense of renewal and support.

Considerations and Safety

Colonics are generally considered a low-risk procedure for healthy adults when performed by trained practitioners using properly serviced equipment. However, individuals with certain medical conditions (e.g., bowel disease, recent surgery, active infections) should avoid the procedure unless cleared to do so by a healthcare provider.

Open vs. Closed Systems

While the names may not indicate a difference, the equipment setup can vary. Colon cleansing procedures are performed using either a closed system or an open system.

Closed Systems

  • A rigid rectal speculum 2.5 -3 cm in diameter (approx. 5 inches / 12–13 cm) is inserted into the rectum
  • The therapist controls the inflow and outflow of filtered water using valves and tubing.
  • Waste is carried away through a sealed tube into a disposal unit.

  • The therapist remains present for the entire session, as they must insert and hold the speculum in place within the anal sphincter while also managing the water flow.

  • Some clients may find this level of physical involvement less private or uncomfortable compared to an open system.

Open System (LIBBE)

  • A small, disposable rectal tube, the size of a pencil 0.7 mm, ~1–1.5 inches insertion) is self-inserted by the client.
  • Water enters gently by gravity, not pressure.
  • Waste passes naturally into a basin beneath the client and is flushed away.
  • Clients remain in control, with greater privacy, while a therapist is available if assistance is needed.
  • At Colon Irrigation Melbourne, the LIBBE system has been used for over 25 years with an outstanding safety record. It is recognised as one of Melbourne’s leading clinics for colonics and digestive wellness.
